Wonderful example of the rare 1st model Morse carbine manufactured in Greenville South Carolina. Total production is estimated to have been around 1000 with approximately 200 of those being the 1st. model. This particular arm is serial number 16 indicating early 1864 production. The slender brass frame along with the protruding hand grip make it easy identifiable. The hammer action is somewhat spongy but still functions properly. the brass frame, butt plate and nose cap have a pleasing mustard patina. The .50 caliber barrel has a grayish brown patina with some rifling remaining but somewhat pitted. The wood is fine with the exception of an area forward ahead of the butt plate that has been cracked. This particular gun is pictured in the fighting men of the Civil War.
