In 1852 John Luther advertised in the Cincinnati, Ohio paper as a cutler making Shears and Scissors. Sometime thereafter he obviously engaged in the sword making business. I know of one other sword by this maker and it was carried by a Confederate officer during the War Between the States.
The sword is in as found condition with the exception of a repair to the scabbard. The brass guard and hangers have a very deep dark as found uncleaned patina. The leather grips are intact showing age chipping in several places with 2 single strand and 1 twisted brass wire wrap all intact on the grip. The unstopped fuller blade is fine with etching and the makers name, J LUTHER Cin. O. etched on the spine.
