Very fine condition with remnants of case hardening on lock. Of particular note is the spacing of the rear site. It is farther forward on the barrel that what is usually encountered on the Mississippi rifle. Original unaltered .54 caliber with strong rifling. Whitney produced approximately 26,000 under 4 contracts from 1843 until 1855. The lock strongly dated 1850 with the barrel dated 1851. The wood is fine with inspector's cartouches visible opposite the lock. the wood is nice with several nicks and dings associated with storage. This gun appears to have never been fired.
