SOUTH CAROLINA ENLISTED MAN'S ARTILLERY SABER
Item #: df31

Ultra rare Circa 1830 artillery saber manufactured by Nathan Peabody Ames of Springfield, Massachusetts as part of a small state contract. Unique to this South Carolina contract sword is the modified bird's head pommel. Although unmarked this example is identical to another marked specimen still with the original South Carolina belt. There are very few examples of this rare pattern sword extant today. Several noted sword experts that I have talked to concur that these Ames swords were made for a prewar Charleston artillery unit.
Fine example exhibiting 99% of the original leather wrap on the grip and with all of the twisted wire wrap still remaining. The guard and pommel exhibit a dark brass patina and has never been cleaned. The blade has a medium grey mottled appearance with a very few minor nicks near the tip. The iron scabbard has a very deep dark patina and has never been cleaned along with both external ring mounts. Near the end of the scabbard are about 6 hack marks where it has been struck by another saber.
