Often called the Remington Zouave Rifle made between 1862-1865 with total production at about 12,000. Strong markings on the lock with REMINGTON'S/ILION,N.Y and Eagle and dated 1863. Strong markings on the barrel with remains of the original blue finish. The barrel has a small amount of pitting around the nipple area.The butt-plate has a strong US marking and all the brass parts have a pleasing patina. The cavity in the patch-box still retains the spare nipple with hinged lid operating properly. The wood is nice with a few minor nicks and dings and still retains the inspector's cartouche. The 33 inch barrel measures about .61 caliber at the mouth with some rifling remaining. The mechanical action is crisp and functions properly.
