A note in the back of the image identifies the soldier as Stephen H. Gillespie of the 15th Iowa infantry. The note also states that he was killed before Atlanta, Georgia. His records state that he originally enlisted on 10/15/1861, reenlisted 1/29/1864 and was killed on 7/22/1864 during the Battle of Atlanta. During the battle of Atlanta on July 22nd the 15th Iowa suffered heavy casualties with 12 KIA, 59 wounded, 17 captured and 66 reported missing. The image is somewhat dark and housed in a 1/2 leatherette case.
