Confederate wooden canteen nicely carved indicating that it was "Traded for November 10th, 1863, with a Johnny Reb 30th Alabama volunteers J.H.R. Co. D 55th Oh. Lookout Creek Tenn." My research indicates that that would have been Jarious H. Rowland of the 55th Ohio infantry. Both regiments were in the Lookout Mountain valley at that time. One possible scenario would have been that they exchanged canteens while on picket duty. There are several documented accounts of such moments by common soldiers on both sides having such interactions.
