1/9 plate tintype and related material pertaining to Sergeant Joel G. Brown who served in the 12th Michigan Infantry. The grouping consists of his tintype and 2 commissions as sergeant and later sergeant major and also one of his discharges dated Dec. 1863. Interestingly sergeant Brown was discharged in 1863 and then reenlisted and served until February 1866 when he was discharged. Of special interest, also included is a handwritten song titled Weeping Sad and Lonely. The song is about a lonely soldier far from home missing his loved ones and not knowing if he is going to die in battle. Last is and envelope addressed to his widow containing her widow pension papers.
