Very nice militia rifle with the name William O'Reilly engraved on the trigger guard. The sporting lock is marked T.R. Mitchell warranted. The barrel is .69 caliber smooth bore and has a beautiful smooth plumb brown patina overall. The brass butt-plate, trigger guard and nose cap exhibit a nice dark mustard patina. The wood is sharp and clean with a tiny hairline crack behind the barrel tang. The ramrod appears to be a replacement. The trigger guard is typical of those found on Justice and some J. Henry rifles suggesting a Pennsylvania connection. A very fine example of an attempt to arm troops at the beginning of the Civil War.
