An estimated quantity of 26,296 of these arms were manufactured at Harper's Ferry between 1846-1855. This particular rifle is the type 2 alteration performed at Harpers Ferry in order for these rifles to accept a saber bayonet. A barrel lug was added, and the front band was cut back in order to accept the saber bayonet. Also, a long-range rear sight was installed. The lock and barrel retain a pleasant brown patina with matching 1850 barrel and lock date. All markings are sharp and clear on the lock and barrel and the ramrod appears to be a replacement. Some misguided individual lightly cleaned the barrel stampings in order to read them. All brass parts have a nice patina. The wood is nice with an inspector's cartouche visible opposite the lock. The stock has the usual nicks and dings associated with storage and field use. The bore is now smooth and measures approximately .60 caliber.
