Nice example with the R. Johnson lock marking and dated 1823. Johnson produced approximately 5000 of these arms between 1821-1823. Sharp and strong markings on the barrel and lock plate. This one has been converted to percussion by the nipple in barrel method common for U.S. arsenal conversions. All metal parts have a brownish patina with very light pitting around the nipple. The original .54 caliber bore is fine. The wood is fine with a visible inspector's cartouche with the exception of a minor crack near the side plate. The lock action is crisp and functions properly and is free from any defects. A nice example of a flintlock rife altered to percussion for Civil War use.
