Civil War saddle with the name W.A. Buckner scratched into the flap. This saddle was previously in the collection of the late Gary Bisacky. I handled his estate when he passed and remember it having a tag identifying it as belonging to W.A. Buckner 5th Kentucky Cav. Unfortunately, the tag is no longer with the saddle. My research also finds a North Carolina cavalryman with the same name. I have no reason to doubt the attribution to the Kentucky soldier and the identification on the tag that was on it when I sold it about 8 years ago.
The saddle is in good condition showing wear and use from service in the field. Private Buckner enlisted into company C of the 5th Kentucky cavalry on September 9, 1862. Research on Ancestry list him as being captured in October 1864 at Paris, Kentucky and imprisoned at Camp Chase, Ohio.
