Dug Spur engraved with the name B.E. Stiles and the date May 1, 1856. Information I received is that a set of spurs were given to the winner of a Savannah Georgia militia competition. My research finds that Benjamin Edward Stiles was born in 1836 in Habersham County near Savannah, Georgia. The 1860 census list his occupation as a gentleman. With the commencement of hostilities Benjamin Stiles entered company E of the 16th Georgia Infantry as a Captain on July 24, 1861. Company E was made up of recruits from Habersham County Georgia and were known as the Cobb Infantry. The 16th fought in all the major battles with the Army of Northern Virginia beginning at Malvern Hill and the Peninsula Campaign. The regiment was also at South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg around the Wheatfield and the base of little Round Top. Also, they fought with Longstreet in the Tennessee campaign. Upon returning to Virginia, they were present at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor. At the battle of Deep Bottom, Virginia Lieutenant Colonel Stiles age 28 would meet his maker, killed in battle on August 16. He was then buried in the Stonewall Confederate Cemetary in Winchester, Virginia. His wife Clelia to whom he had only been married to for 1 year mourned his loss. She never remarried and upon her death in 1887 she asked to be buried with her late husband at the Stonewall Cemetary in Winchester, Virginia. Her wish was granted, and she became the first woman to be buried in the Confederate Cemetery.
