Very nice condition coat that was originally purchased from the family in 2011 along with a notarized statement from a family member indicating provenance.
Captain Cockrill's name is found written inside the watch pocket inside the trousers. The coat and pants are in very good condition as noted in my photographs. The front of the coat has 14 "Superior Quality" Eagle staff buttons that appear to have been resewn however the original sewing thread is still present.. The coat and trousers have identical red corded trim. The collar has red backed Captain's insignia consisting of three bullion bars. The sleeves are also trimmed in red with double strand bullion denoting the rank of Captain. The sleeves are typical of Civil War coats with wide balloon elbows 10 inches wide. The cuffs exhibit extra red trim running up the sleeves with 2 strands of bullion tape along with a series of small brass buttons. The cadet gray colored uniform has some mothing and 1 hole approximately 1 inch in diameter has been repaired as shown in my pictures. The lining is intact but has areas of shredding and tears. The tail buttons are missing as well as 5 of the small beads on the cuffs. The trousers are a light gray color constructed with the same sewing threads as in the coat. The surface of the pants show scattered staining and areas of light staining. Some moth tracking can be seen in various places but the knap is still present. One leg has a about 5 1/2 long strip that appears to be melted wax that the purchaser should have removed.
Captain Cockrill served throughout the war enlisting in May of 1861 as 2nd lieutenant and finally as captain until signing an oath of allegiance on May 16, 1865 in Greensboro North Carolina. Rutledge's Battery was formed mostly in Nashville, Tennessee and were armed with cannons manufactured at Brennan's Foundry of Nashville, Tennessee. The unit fought in many of the early actions in Kentucky with General Zollicofer including actions at Cumberland Gap, Barboursville, Wild Cat and finally Mill Springs where General Zollicofer was killed.. After the battle of Mill Springs the battery joined Albert Sidney Johnston's army and was present at the Battle of Shiloh.Cockrill continued to serve in the actions of the Army of Tennessee until the surrender. The grouping comes with a notebook with extensive research on Captain Cockrill and his family.
