Top shelf quality example typical of those manufactured by Louis Haiman of Columbus, Georgia. Attached is an old tag that states it was carried by Moses McClintic of Company E of the 60th Virginia Infantry, of the Confederate Army of the South. It states that he was killed at Cloyd's Farm, Virginia on May,9 1864. This sword was originally in the collection of Russ Pritchard Sr. and is pictured in the book Fighting Men on page 86 #1. One tag is from Gary Bisacky stating that he purchased the sword from Russ Pritchard in 1993 and that Russ purchased it in 1965. There is a Moses McClintic listed as killed at Cloyd's Farm in the American Civil War Research database. I seems odd that a infantry officer would have carried a Cavalry saber but some are know to have done so. Doing more research I found a Moses McClintic on ancestry from Bath County, Virginia. He was too old to serve in the Civil War but he had two sons who served in Cavalry units and both died in the Civil War. My research is included with the sword.
The grips retain all of the original oil cloth and iron wire wrap. The crude lapped seal scabbard is in fine condition with one noticeable dent above the drag. The brass mounts, pommel cap and guard retain a beautiful age old mellow patina just like you like to find them. The blade has a mottled gray appearance with a few nicks on the sharpened edge.
