Extremely rare Dufilho presentation officer's sword with presentation and full firm marking on blade. The blade is etched with the presentation on one side " TO DAVID MCCOARD FROM HIS FRIENDS IN CONFEDERATE GUARDS CO. D." On the opposite side nicely etched in a panel is " CS ". David McCoard is shown mustering into the Louisiana Confederate Guards Infantry March 1st,1862, as a first Lieutenant. Daniel Hartzler in his book CONFEDERATE PRESENTATION INSCRIBED SWORDS AND REVOLVERS shows another similarly handled sword with an almost identical inscription to this one. There is some speculation that these were etched by J.F. Zimmerman of New Orleans. The firm name Dufilho is lightly struck but visible. Agrider H. Dufilho was born in 1836 in France and immigrated to this country and settled in New Orleans. The 1860 census list him as a manufacturer of cutlery located at 21 Royal Street. The brass guard, pommel cap, and mounts all exhibit a chocolate/ mustard brown patina with traces of gold gilt. The certifiably antique ivory grip exhibits fine patina with several longitudinal cracks. The original triple brass wire wraps are intact and tightly wound. The 29-inch blade is gray with some staining and minor pitting. The 22-inch presentation panel is all discernable. The leather scabbard has chips and scuffing and has been professionally redyed black to improve the appearance.
