Top quality example of the Confederate type 4 Fayetteville rifle dated 1864. The Barrel has a beautiful smooth dark patina with some pitting around the nipple and bolster still retaining the 1864 barrel date. The rear sight is original with one of the leafs broken and with the front site filed to a point as shown in my pictures. The lock has a pleasant dark patina with strong markings and with crisp mechanical functions. All the brass parts have a mellow patina with the butt plate nicely marked CSA. The wood is uncleaned and has a nice dark appearance with the JB inspector cartouche visible opposite the lock. Forward of the front lock screw is a flaw in the wood with was there at the time of production. There is a slight crack right behind the nose cap as shown in my pictures. The wood also has the normal nicks and dings associated with field use. I purchased this fine rifle about 40 years ago and it resided in my collection for many years until it was sold a few years back. Overall a wonderful Confederate rifle that is of top shelf quality for a Confederate used in the field firearm.
