Politician and Lawyer David Stuart was born on March 11, 1816, in Brooklyn, New York. He later moved with his father to Michigan where he served a term in the United States House of Representatives and later to Chicago, Illinois where he practiced law. At the outbreak of hostilities in 1861 Stuart raised 2 regiments, the 42nd Illinois and the 55th Illinois and equipped the regiments with his own funds.
David Stuart became a Colonel of the 55th Illinois and later led a Brigade at the Battle of Shiloh where he was wounded. Later he commanded a regiment in the siege of Corinth. On November 29, 1862. At the battles of Chickasaw Bayou and Arkansas Post he led a division. During March 1863 Stuarts promotion to Brigadier General was rejected by the U.S. Senate. More than likely the rejection was probably due to the fact he was a Democrat. In April he resigned from the army and returned to Chicago to practice law and later passed away on September11, 1868.
One sword is a Cavalry officers sword made by Klingenthal of France. Presentation inscribed on the guard is " D. KRIEGH TO COLONEL DAVID STUART"
The other sword is an import staff and field officers sword presentation inscribed on the throat "NOBLIS IRA E.L. SMITH TO LT. COL. DAVID STUART 1ST. REGIMENT DOUGLAS BRIGADE."
Additional research is needed to find information on the presenters.
Both swords are in very fine condition with beautifully etched blades. The grips and wire wrap are in very fine condition and free from any defects.
