Georgia Hussars cavalry guidon found in an old antebellum house in Savannah, Georgia. The historic Georgia Hussars of Savannah, Georgia are a Cavalry unit that were formed before the American Revolution and are still in service today. The Hussars were organized in 1736 by General James Oglethorpe to provide protection for the new colony of Georgia. The unit would gallantly fight in all of America's wars and continue to serve today as part of the Georgia National Guard. After the Civil War the United States Congress abolished all southern state militias. The Hussars were able to resume military service in 1872. In 1875 they became Troop A 1st Squadron of Cavalry. They were then re-designated in 1889 as the 1st Cavalry. The Hussars saw service on the Mexican border in 1916 and then served briefly in World War 1 as part of the 31st Dixie Division.
The quidon measures 38 inches from the fly to each tip and is 28 inches wide. I have mounted it into a frame that measures 52 inches by 42 inches. The flag is of Cotton and wool construction with evidence of water staining. Several of the silk pieces are loose and have deterioration as noted in my photographs. The tip of the red cotton is loose and a few moth holes are present in several places.
