I have often seen this style saber listed as a type 1 Kenansville. However, I am of the opinion that these swords were made by another manufacturer. The blade is not typical of the blades on the classic Kenansville sabers in the fact that the blade has a flat spine and the classic Kenansville sabers have a rounded spine on the blade. Interestingly this one has a serrated leather throat washer that appears original to the sword. Over the years I have seen several B. Douglas confederate swords with this same style throat washers. I have also noted several of these swords that have been freshly found with different scabbards. The scabbard with this sword is the classic Kenansville style scabbard and has the roman numerals on the throat. Even though it matches perfectly I am of the opinion that it is a replacement.
All the brass parts have a beautiful matching patina. The grips retain approximately 95% of the original oil cloth wrap and all of the copper single strand wire wrap. The crude lapped scabbard has a deep brown patina and several traces of the original maroon paint visible in several areas. The blade is in fine condition with a dark mottled brown appearance.
