Historic cavalry saber that likely saw service in one of Jeb Stuart's cavalry regiments. Prior to the war, in 1860, the State of Virginia sent approximately 1000 Virginia Manufactory swords to Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts to be lightened and fitted with new iron scabbards with brass mounts. This example is one of those sabers.
The condition is good with rust pitting on the scabbard and guard likely from barn or cellar storage. The leather grips are intact with a few small chips and retain all of the single strand brass wire wrap. The blade is nice with a gray mottled appearance and nicely marked 1 VA. Reg't on the spine. I think I can hear the Rebel Yell off in the distance when I hold it.
