Very nice example artillery short sword dated 1841 made by N.P. Ames Springfield, Massachusetts. All the brass parts have a nice age old brownish patina. The scabbard is solid with tight stitching showing some age crinkling on the surface. The blade has a gray mottled appearance with good markings. The blade is marked UNITED STATES over 1841 with W.S. inspectors mark and on the opposite side marked with an eagle over N. P. AMES SPRINGFIELD. Marked on the inside flat are the initials MPL over ORD. and W.S.
